Even though canned food drives may be seen as an event from the 70’s there are still real people in your community who benefit. Here are some ideas on how give the classic canned food drive an overhaul. With food prices on the rise and many Americans losing their jobs its no wonder local food banks are feeling the pinch. Even though canned food drives may be seen as an event from the 70’s there are still real people in your community who benefit. Here are some ideas on how give the classic canned food drive an overhaul.

Donation Incentive Programs

Work with local business to establish a food drive incentive program. For example, for every dozen items someone donates they receive a coupon or a discounted purchase at a local business.

Raffle

Run a raffle for a collection of items that is either donated by a business or purchased by the chapter, every donation receives an entry in the raffle.

Canned Food Entry Fee

At your next chapter social event make the entry fee a can of food. At some schools chapters have a booth on campus for the entire week of the party, you can use this booth time to help promote your event and take donations for your food drive.

Don’t Forget…

  • Set a goal to raise an amount of cans.
  • Give a reason for why you are trying to raise that amount of cans (1,000 cans will feed x number of people for x length of time).
  • Provide information about the organization the items will be donated to, who they service and who benefits.
  • Publicize the goal and promote your progress.
  • Make the event fun for everyone involved!
